gonna be honest here, i completely forgot the password to the Press Reporter account.. so i have to do this on my own... sorry for clogging up hockey central again
Welcome back hockey fans! Boy do we have quite the show for you today.. lots of action around PS5HL, some more minor, some absolutely huge, some.. interesting ones. We'll cover it all for you today!
The first domino to fall today was Casey Cizikas heading to Seattle. And no offense to Casey or Seattle Spitfires GM Kruze but.. YAWN 🥱. Let's be honest here, we don't all keep our eyes glued to the free agent listings to see Casey Cizikas sign, alright? Luckily for us, that was really only the dip in excitement for today... (except for Marcus Foligno and Palestine, who will not be mentioned past this point. Sorry 🤷♂️)
PR was able to read the room and to keep everyone invested and dropped an absolutely bombshell shortly after whats-his-name signed - after being criminally underpaid his entire career Patrice Bergeron accepted Minnesota's offer of sending a dumptruck full of money to his home - the final deal being 11.25M for just 1 year. Have to respect a man taking the bag in the back nine of his career, and heading over to Minnesota to help mentor what looks to be one of - if not, the, youngest team in the league.
Next up on the list of boomers in Free Agency was Jamie Benn, going with the option of term on a 2 year, 13M dollar deal (6.5M AAV). San Francisco Firedogs GM Retro was looking to be very active in Free Agency, landing some of his targets, while missing out on others. Here's what he had to say about what Jamie Benn brings to his franchise "Come play on the 2nd line, this team is going to improve, we are going in the right direction." It's a longshot, but maybe Benn finds a new gear in San Fran, shedding the label of likely being the only player in PS5HL history to win the Art Ross trophy, but fail to make the Hall of Fame? We'll just have to wait and see...
We take a break from the starstudded action of this installment of Free Agent Frenzy to bring you Brayden McNabb, finalizing a 3 year, 12M dollar deal (4M AAV) with the Tokyo Dream Monkeys. McNabb looks poised to bring his steady and reliable play to a backend in Tokyo experiencing some major overhaul after their defensive corps. last season just weren't good enough, playing a major part in Tokyo's last place finish.
The wave of middle pairing players continue, this time 37 year old Brent Burns is staying North of the border, heading to Brampton on a 1 year 5M dollar deal. Burns, coming off of a down year with the Sudbury Wolves, looks to obtain a second wind in the late stages of his PS5HL career as the critics continue to say that father time has finally caught up to him. Burns and Bramptom attempting to prove these doubters wrong will be one of the main storylines of this upcoming season. And hey, even if he doesn't, he'll always have his acting role on the History Channel series 'Vikings' to fall back on.
Now, our next Free Agent signing lead to a very interesting series of events.. Eberle put pen to paper on a 2 year 8M dollar deal (4M AAV) with the Brampton Battalion. Seems pretty standard on the surface, right? Well, as it turns out, Brampton GM spittinchiclets really only threw an offer to Eberle just to really.. make his presence known I guess? ANYWAYS, chiclets submitted that offer with no belief that Eberle would actually, you know, accept his contract offer worth 8 Million Dollars. So in response to this absolutely shocking and unforeseen event, he traded poor Nino Nieddereiter once again this offseason. Sources clos to Niedderieter claimed that he had yet to even meet with the coaching staff or travel to the city before being shipped off again - Nieddereiter was described as "Getting passed around like herpes in a College community" by Northstars GM Minny. Ouch. Hopefully Nino is able to last at least a week or two with his new team in San Francisco.
Voracek goes ring chasing in Palestine on a 1 year 7.5M dollar deal equipped with a NMC. Not much else to say there. Palestine with an efficient, yet boring day at the office.
Now here's a move that's causing a lot of drama in the hockey world. Anze Kopitar seems to sign a 1 year 10M dollar deal with Dinamo Riga, nothing overly special about it, right? Just another older player securing funds while he still can. Well, Commissioner Mikko doing an excellent and thorough job comes swooping in with a bombshell that breaks this whole thing wide open: Victoria and Kopitar had agreed to an extension on the day before Free Agency opened, seemingly the contract was mishandled and was failed to be processed properly by the league - leading to the Slovakian center hitting the open market. Besides the mishap by the league, this raises some questions about Kopitar and his character. Why would he go sign a deal with another team after agreeing to another? How is this going to effect the Grizzlies locker room, watching their captain pull a stunt like this? Will Victoria even WANT Kopitar back after he threw the entire organization under the bus? This will definitely be a very interesting story to follow over the coming days.
And finally.. the moment everyone has been waiting for. One of the biggest Free Agents to hit the open market in PS5HL history, seemingly the entire league bidding for his services. Roman Josi had the choice of virtually any team he wanted, so who did he end up choosing to likely the spend the rest of his career with? After a lot of thinking, the Swiss Superstar finally settled on the Tokyo Dream Monkeys, signing an absolutely massive 7 year, 77M dollar deal (11M AAV), it doesn't get much better than that for a 33 year old. Josi was seemingly moved by Dream Monkeys GM Max Brown's pitch, which was leaked to the press earlier today, it read: "Hey Roman.. you’re from Switzerland.. with all the beautiful scenery there you probably like Romin’ around,,, why not come to the beautiful Tokyo and help grow the game of hockey in Japan as apart of the leadership group in Japan?" Josi's decision and the contract offered by Tokyo was a controversial one among fellow general managers, leading to reactions such as: "Okay Max I know you're sane but what is this? I thought my offer of 5Mx7 was bad hahahaha", "Bruh I offered more than that to play in a better city, Josi you made a terrible decision and we hate you", "Panicking right now, wtf do I do now this ruined all my plan guess I'll stick with some bums Lol", and my personal favourite, " ". The Dream Monkeys have made it clear Josi will be their anchor on the blue line for a large part of PS5HL, and the perception of how this deal is looked back on after it's finished will largely be determined by not only Josi's individual success, but the Dream Monkeys success as a whole. Tokyo has made a huge gamble, only time will tell to see if it pays off.
And that's all for this installment of Free Agent Frenzy. Don't take your eye off of the transactions yet though, there's still some good players left unsigned and many moves to be made as teams get ready for opening night. The hockey world never sleeps.
