It's been a while Dream Monkeys.. but we're back. This time with some exclusive draft day coverage for Japan's favourite show on ice.
Things were looking down for Tokyo as they failed to meet the required quota of altar sacrifices to the hockey gods during the season, and as a result fell from their coveted number 1 spot in the draft, all the way down to 4th - the lowest they could possibly drop.
The GM, unsatisfied with the results of the lottery, got to work on the phones, utilizing the teams assets and repertoire of other picks.
The first domino to fall was the dealing of the 4th overall pick to Jacksonville, in exchange for young defenceman Evan Bouchard, the 25th Overall pick in the draft, and the 35th overall pick in the draft. Bouchard - a 6'2" right shot defenceman from Oakville Ontario, is an offensive minded defenceman with a very heavy shot and a bevy of other tools in his offensive repertoire. Bouchard comes in providing some much needed fire power as well as youth that was clearly missing from the Dream Monkeys blueline last season.
Next up on the list was acquiring another high draft pick now that 4th overall was dealt. Unfortunately, the price was far from cheap. To acquire the 2nd overall pick from the Hartford Whalers Tokyo was forced to cough up one of the first alternate captains in Dream Monkeys history: Ivan Provorov. We wish him a long and successful career on his new team.
The final move in a busy draft for the Dream Monkeys was to trade up one last time: from 8th to 6th. The final deal going down as the 8th overall and 25th overall pick in exchange for the 6th overall pick and a 2nd round pick in the next season.
You may be asking know "What was that all for, who the hell did we pick!?!" Well.. the time is finally here... with the 2nd overall pick the Tokyo Dream Monkeys selected:
From Dream Monkeys Head of Amateur Scouting and Assistant GM Yusuke Kitagawa on Lambert:
"There is no doubting the pure talent level. He’s a dynamic skater and puckhandler. On a given rush Lambert can differentiate himself with his speed and evasiveness. He can make plays and do so with pace."
With their other first round pick the Dream Monkeys once again chose to build up their center ice position, this time going with:
This is what Assistant GM and Head of Amateur Scouting Yusuke Kitagawa has to say about Savoie:
"There isn’t a player in this draft class whose game thrills more than Savoie’s does. Inside the offensive zone, he’s lethal. He’s got extremely quick side-to-side hands that help him beat defenders one-on-one off of cuts."
And this has been YOUR Tokyo Dream Monkeys RD 1 Roundup, we appreciate you keeping up with and continuing to support the team. It won't be long before you hear from us again, Free Agent Frenzy is right around the corner after all...
